City of ParanaQue (pop. 449,811; 2000 Census), (Filipino: Lungsod ng ParanaQue), is one of the cities and municipalities that make up Metro Manila in the Philippines. It is bordered on the north by Pasay City, by Taguig City to the northeast, Muntinlupa City to the southeast, by Las Pinas City to the southwest, and by Manila Bay to the west.

ParanaQue was founded in 1572. Since the place lay very proximate to the sea, the Paraquenos did much trade with the Chinese, Indonesians, Indians and Malayans. At that time the main means of livelihood were salt-making, fishing, planting rice, shoemaking, slipper-making and weaving. The community was headed by cabezas de barangay, a westernization of the local chieftains and the principalia as the local aristocrats were called, a very durable social institution since they were the political absorbers. They justified and moderated the demands of the Spanish colonizers. Education was limited to the principalia since it is only they who could afford it. The recorded beginnings of Palanyag began in 1580 when Fr. Diego de Espinar, an Augustinian missionary, was appointed Prior or superior of the convent or religious house of the town. As resident priest, he established the mission house there, with its spiritual jurisdiction reaching up to Kawit in the province of Cavite. The Council of the Definitors (or conference of chiefs of the religious orders) held on May 11, 1580, accepted Palanyag as an independent town. The image of Palanyag's patroness, Nuestra Señora del Buensuceso, was brought to St. Andrew's Church in La Huerta in 1625.

Shangri-La luxury hotel in Taguig to be completed by 2012

THE SHANGRI-LA group is expected to finish building its $250-million luxury hotel in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City by 2012.

At more than 60 storeys, 500 guestrooms and 234 apartments, the building would become a landmark, the company said in a statement yesterday.

The new hotel will complement the four existing hotel properties of Shangri-La Asia Limited in the Philippines and the Shangri-La Resort and Spa, Boracay, which is scheduled to open late this year.

"Shangri-La at the Fort will not only be a striking new addition to the Manila skyline, but a demonstration of our firm commitment to the Philippines," said Edward Kuok, president and chief executive officer of Shangri-La Asia Limited. "Our presence and confidence in this market continues to grow, with an expanding portfolio of business and leisure properties," he added.

The mixed-use business, residential and retail tower will be located along 5th Avenue and 30th St., within the fast-developing Taguig business district.

A 30-minute drive from the international airport, the hotel will also be close to the Manila Golf and Polo Club, and 10 minutes from the Makati central business district.

Shangri-La has named US-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP as architect and Hirsch Bedner Associates will undertake the interior design for guestrooms and the main lobby.

Guestrooms will range in size from 52 square meters for a deluxe room, to 260 square meters for the presidential suite.

The hotel will also feature a total of 4,660 square meters of meeting and banqueting facilities, including a grand ballroom, junior ballroom, 11 function rooms, a boardroom, business center, individual teleconferencing room and a 350-square meter outdoor event area.
